It started storming before the Saints-Jets game. Umbrella-less tailgaters like me scrambled for shelter. Thankfully, poncho salesmen were soon out in droves.
“Getchya ponchos heh. PONCHOS. Fah dollaz.”
How perfect! I’m getting rained on and you’re selling hooded garbage bags. I’ll take one.
Before the Saints-Giants game, there wasn’t a cloud, or poncho salesman in sight.
No sales opportunity. No sales.
It's great to take advantage of favorable circumstances, but you need a plan that creates opportunities, rather than hoping one falls out of the sky.

Microsoft’s ad for Windows 7 is relying on the ole, “that kid is so cute I have to buy whatever the hell that is,” technique. It’s usually foolproof.
But they didn’t stop there. They upped the cuteness factor exponentially by adding kittens, marshmallows, unicorns and bunnies. I have my credit card ready.
Early product reviews are mixed, and with the release date about 10 days away, success is yet to be determined.
To their credit, though, at least you can understand most of what the girl is saying. Usually some kid is just babbling inaudibly to the camera...
"Plz com ot see dadda ma shop buy fertcher."
Huh? What's fertcher?
Ahhh, the little rascal is jumping on a sofa. Maybe it’s a furniture ad?
I’m not saying kids shouldn’t be in commercials, I’m just saying consider having them hold a sign or something.

One day my fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Lena, walked to the back corner of the classroom and whispered something in my friend Mark’s ear. She then told him to quietly repeat what she said in the next person’s ear until everybody had a chance to relay the message.
She whispered, “Today’s mashed potatoes were yummy,” but by the time it got to Jacob on the other side of the class, he heard “Mr. Potato Head’s nose was runny.”
The more people involved, the more likely messages will be misinterpreted.
Are all of your marketing partners relaying the same message?

I’ve been writing for the agency for a couple years now. Like everybody, I love hearing positive feedback.
But holy crap, nothing is more agonizing than e-mailing my coworkers the first round of concepts…
“They’re gonna love this! I hope they like it. I put a lot of thought into it. It’s been three minutes, why haven’t they responded? They must hate it. Do I hear laughing? It wasn’t supposed to be funny. Now I’ll have to prep the info for the freelancer. I knew I shouldn’t have used the line about the donkey. C’mon, don’t sugarcoat it, just tell me it sucks.”
Compliments or constructive criticism usually follows, which makes presenting to the client easy by comparison.
And now they want me to write a blog.

We’ve been talking about our new website, and this new blog for a long time now. Both have experienced more delays than a shuttle launch. But here they are.
And what did we find through all of our research and prep work to make this blog happen? That blogging is dead. Replaced by things like Twitter and Facebook.
Well, better late than never I guess.
But those things killed blogs the same way TV killed radio, and the same way internet killed TV; they didn’t. Until we run out of knowledge, opinions and observations about marketing in the Gulf South and beyond, we’re going to keep this thing going. Or until Brett Favre actually retires, whatever comes first.
So, welcome to our blog. I’d write more but I have to go tweet about it.
